Arts and Design Career Descriptions

Visual artist communicate ideas, thoughts, and feelings through a variety of methods and materials. Visual artist generally fall into two categories, graphic artist and fine artist depending not so much on the medium but on the artist's purpose in creating a work of art. Designers organize and design articles, products and materials that serve the purpose for which they were intended and are visually pleasing. Many designers specialize in a particular area of design such as automobiles, clothing, furniture, home appliances, industrial equipment, interiors of homes and office buildings, exhibits, movie and theater sets, packaging, or floral arrangements.

Annual salary range is from $23,000-$97,000

Art and design jobs are expected to grow faster than average for all occupations though the year 2006.

Employers generally prefer to hire people with some experience or other training.

Cartoonists and Animators
Provides drawings used for publications or animation to amuse audience. No formal experience or training necessary.


Architectural Drafter I
Conceives, designs, plans and constructs models for new or modified structures. May be responsible for coordinating and determining quantity and types of materials, while planning sequences for ordering materials. May require an associate's degree in related area and 0-2 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Works under immediate supervision. Little creativity is required. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager.

Art Manager
Plans, directs, and coordinates all activities in the art department. Works with marketing department to design TV commercials, catalogs, brochures, etc. May require bachelor's degree and at least 7 years of experience in the field. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Typically reports to a senior manager.


Designer I - Web
Produces graphic sketches, designs, and copy layouts for online content. Determines size and arrangement of illustrative material and copy, selects style and size of type, and arranges layout based upon available space, knowledge of layout principles, and aesthetic design concepts. May require an associate's degree or its equivalent and 2 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Works under immediate supervision. Little creativity is required. Typically reports to a manager.


Designer II - Web

Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Works under immediate supervision. Little creativity is required. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager.

May have to complete an apprenticeship and/or formal training in area of specialty with 2-4 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on limited experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. Works under general supervision. A certain degree of creativity and latitude is required. Typically reports to a supervisor/manager.
